Dietitians are regulated health professionals who have a minimum of an undergraduate or postgraduate degree in Dietetics and are required to undergo 1,000 hours of practice as part of their training. Dietitians are the only nutrition profession with legal regulation. The title 'dietitian' is protected by law and only those who are registered with the statutory regulator, the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) can use the title. You can check the HCPC register here. Dietitians follow evidence-based practice and use the most up-to-date public health and scientific research on food, health and disease to assess, diagnose and treat diet and nutritional problems at an individual and wider public health level. Some areas where Dietitians work include in health services (e.g. the NHS), in private practice, public health, industry, education or in sports. Further information about the different types of nutrition professions can be found via the British Dietetic Association here
A short answer to this question is that there are multiple methods and study designs used to conduct research. The strength of the evidence will vary depending on the method/study design used in the research. It is important to be aware that the evidence is not all equal! To interpret whether there is robust evidence to support an intervention requires in-depth training to develop skills to critique the level of evidence and determine if the science can support the recommendation. Gaining support and advice from a professional who is trained, skilled and experienced to provide evidence-based practice means you receive the highest quality and most effective care possible that uses proven science rather than hopeful thinking or guesswork!

The use of a food diary is not required as standard prior to your initial assessment. We recognise there are limitations to its use as a standard 'one-size' approach. If during your assessment the use of a food diary is felt to be relevant to your needs, we will discuss this. For example, it may be suggested where assessment indicates your diet is deficient in specific nutrients. If a food diary is indicated, you will be invited to use our food diary and dietary analysis software which provides detailed macro and micronutrient breakdown.
Not at all, we will work with you and build plans around your life, food preferences and routines. Together we will identify any sustainable changes, that can be based on small adjustments to what you already eat and which can support improvements in your health.
